A Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

***tier-3-top.shtml*** Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Here in this cartoon drawing lesson, let's get a little bit nostalgic - and draw a Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey, as voted for by visitors to the site.

Seriously, weren't these creatures the coolest-ever?

Actually, I can remember them being quite frightening when I was little. Something about that movie...

I know it's supposed to be fun for children and all - but between the monkeys, the witch, and yes - even the wizard himself...

There were definitely some scarier parts. :-)

Well, not so here - in this lesson. Cute and cartoony as ever - let's begin!

Let's begin...

How to Draw a Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

So first thing's first then...

Begin - and of course, only if it helps - by sketching out a rough framework for your character, one that will best help to visualize, a simple monkey - as it would look, walking along a branch, high up in a tree.

Here's what I came up with...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

See how that orange line - runs right through the entire framework. That's its spine - well, sort of.

It's more so, a "line of action" - and while not perfectly in line perhaps, with the way the monkey's spine would *really* look...

It's a good indicator for the purpose of this simple cartoon drawing lesson.

Next, Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey framework - part 2...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Ah yes, now we can see what this little guy (girl!?) is all about.

It's clear as ever - just how big the wings will be, and also... where they will be located. Notice how this is a similar approach to other lessons, here on the site.

Dragons, for example!

OK, fading your framework out - or perhaps in your case, going over lightly sketched pencil lines (non photo blue!?) with a black inking pen...

Draw in the eye, and part of its snout - just like this...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

And next up - fading what we just drew now, to grey...

Go over to the left side, and sketch in the other eye - or at least, what we can see of it, seeing how it's obscured by the head.

And the nose too...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Very cool - our winged monkey's looking pretty neat, I'd say!

So next then, moving around and then away - from the head...

Draw a curvy line, one that marks off the upper-portion of the wing. And also, sketch in part of the shoulder too.

Here's how mine looks. How does yours look? Is it *VERY* different!?

Good! Be creative as possible. :-)

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Fun little detail time, now - go on to sketch in some spiky hair, for your Wizard of Oz flying monkey character.

Little arcs along the underside of the wing too, for feathers...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Fading out again, and we're off to mirroring the wing (pretty easy - just get it similar)...

And then on to bringing out the shape of the body, as well as getting the two foremost limbs drawn.

And yes, it's looking like this...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Next up...

Begin sketching in the bigger, lower "vulture-like" feathers, on your winged monkey.

And the yes, move on down to the feet - and sketch those in too. Just like this...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Oh look...

I've sort of *cramped* the style of the wing of this flying monkey from the Wizard of Oz, by having that one awkward looking feather - right in the center.

That's OK though - I kind of like how it looks. Sure it could look better, but I love to push on through each drawing, right to the end - even if along the way... there are a few things, that I'm not so happy with.

One thing too...

I find once you color the drawing - it really helps to take away from any *perceived* errors on the artist's part.

Not always, but it helps...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

Haha - look at its little hat, and its little torn shirt.

Super cute!

Yes, I'm really liking how this lesson is turning out. Go ahead and sketch in the details, just like so...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

OK!

Back to black - now we can see the lines, minus any framework details...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

And then of course - my favorite part of all...

Brining the likeness of our character to "cartoon life" - by laying down a color palette, similar to what we saw, in the movie - Wizard of Oz.

Here it is...

Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey

And yes, there yours is too - right!? A cute, and original-looking take, on the Wizard of Oz Flying Monkey.

Hope you had fun with this lesson. I have an amazing time, designing and drawing every single one.

More to come, as always!
