Draw the 'Forest Spirit' (Night Walker)

***tier-3-top.shtml*** Forest Spirit

The Forest Spirit is a fictional character in the AMAZING anime movie - Mononoke Hime, or 'Princess Mononoke' as we know it in the Western World, by Hayao Miyazaki. Hime means 'Princess' in Japanese.

In the movie, this creature is the keeper of the forest - the source of all its life. In day form, it exists as something similar to a deer, except with a face similar to a human's. At night, it transforms into the 'Night Walker' - and this is what we're drawing in this lesson.

Here we go!

First Step - The Following Arrangement of Shapes...

After watching the movie for the second time, it was interesting eyeing up the structure of this creature. The following arrangement - a guideline to help you with your progression... is what I came up with.

Oval, triangle, rectangle, circle...

The orange dot exists only as a marker - something to position where the eye would be. But as it appears in the film, the eyes can't be seen - either that, or they don't exist when it's in this form.

OK, let's move along to the drawing part...

Second Step - Draw Your 'Night Walker-Mode' Forest Spirit

Before you tackle the following steps - please keep in mind that this drawing is an interpretation of the creature in the movie. It serves as a likeness, a 'cartoon of a cartoon' if you will... your interpretation may be a bit different. And I encourage you to incorporate your own creative ideas as you progress! :-)

That said, here's how it takes shape, step by step...

A little color, and some varying shades of blue and purple - and the Forest Spirit really comes to life as a drawing. The white 'starry' dots arranged along the top area really make it look all the more magical - it's finishing touches like this in a drawing that help to make it all the more neat-looking.

So! How did yours turn out? Hope you enjoyed this lesson! :-)
