How to Draw a Cartoon Crab

***tier-3-top.shtml*** Cartoon Crab

A cartoon crab... with teeth!? What? Well - it is supposed to be 'cartoonish' and all, so really, we can make this animal, or any other... to look however we want it to. As always, the paper sky's the limit. :-)

Here, you can have tons of fun going back to the finished drawing - adding all sorts of little details - dots, lines, hairs, scratches... get creative!

Scurrying onward...

First Step - A Blueprint for a Red Crab

To begin, try out a simple vertical centerline and cross - mapped over an oval. This technique will help you keep everything in line as you progress. By the way, if you're a graphic designer (just a thought) - lessons like these can be really helpful for ideas along the way.

Here's the plan...

Like spiders - these animals have more legs (of course!) than just four. But with respect to drawing and keeping things simple, two legs are fine for now - the rest can be sketched in behind afterwards.

Second Step - How to Draw a Cartoon Crab

Alright - let's get to it. First thing, sketch in the eyes as they would sit atop its head. You can make them further or closer apart, or... you can even draw them extending above the head, kind of like snail eyes. See what you can do here.

Step by step, here's what to do...

Detail time! :-)

It's amazing just how different of look this animal takes on - once we begin sketching in the details. And again, there's no limit as to how far you can take it. Have fun with it and make it your own.

Color-wise, oranges and reds work wonders, but really - there are lots of ways to go here. A blue one with orange spots might look pretty neat!

And again - it's that time. You're all finished. Nice work! :-)
